When I arrive in a new place, I oftentimes seek out advice from locals for places to go. I’ve found that it frequently results is finding some off-the-beaten-path gems with limited tourist traffic.
Rawson Lake was a recommendation from an employee at a tourism office in Canmore. What started as a casual recommendation to avoid the hordes of tourists in Banff, quickly became my favorite alpine lake.
Be warned, however, that the area is filled with grizzly bear sightings and closures. Call ahead to find out whether the trail is open and always have your bear spray on hand.
